This Is Us Star Chris Sullivan Calls Season 4 Completely Unexpected

The Season 3 finale of NBC’s beloved time-jumping drama This Is Us aired more than four months ago, and fans have been patiently waiting for the premiere of Season 4 to find out what will happen next to the Pearson family. Even though the premiere is still one month away, star Chris Sullivan (Toby Damon) has just given fans the first hint on what to expect when the show returns.

Sullivan told PEOPLE Now that the show will go to “completely unexpected” places in the upcoming season.

It is here! Season 4 poster.

“Wherever you think we are going, we are going in a completely different direction,” Sullivan said. “The way the stories are unfolding is pretty amazing. Our writers and [show creator] Dan Fogelman have done a pretty amazing job over four seasons keeping people surprised.”

Sullivan also talked about Toby’s struggles with depression and anxiety during Season 3, and he revealed that the most “intense” scene he has shot so far was his meltdown during his wife Kate’s (Chrissy Metz) pregnancy.

The 39-year-old actor explained that they were shooting with two different crews on that day, and the people he normally shoots with weren’t there. He had to work with a cameraman and sound guy that he had never met before, and it was difficult being surrounded by strangers because the production change took away the “comfort level” and “safety factor.”

Sullivan just received his first-ever Emmy nomination in the supporting actor category, and the show received eight nominations altogether. Mandy Moore, Milo Ventimiglia, and Sterling K. Brown also received nominations for their roles.

This Is Us will last a total of six seasons, and Fogelman said that they are “roughly in the middle” of where the series is going to go. He says they have a “very direct plan,” and he is writing really deep into the future. He knows what the plan is, and Sullivan says that he and his co-stars already know how the show will end.

Of course, no one is going to spill any details. But, Ventimiglia has said that the series’ end will be “amazing.” And, they have also announced that Once Upon A Time’s Jennifer Morrison will join the cast this season in an important recurring role.
